I was responsible for the comprehensive redesign of a federal agency’s website. I focused on aligning the user needs and agency goals by working closely with stakeholders. My goal was to create an experience that would resonate with users and reflect the agency’s mission simultaneously
My Approach:
Conduct research to understand user & business goals.
Closely collaborate with stakeholders to create a content strategy that aligns with the agency's vision.
Develop and iterate on wireframes to create the final product.
My Role:
UX/UI Designer, User Research, Site Architecture, Design Systems, Content Strategy, Visual Design
Duration:
7 Months (Launching Soon!)
Tools: Figma, Jira, Slack
VENMO: Adding A savings feature
The agency had a vision to communicate its true value to the public in an accessible, user-friendly way all within a strict 7-month deadline.
This project was a complete redesign, with goals to:
Improve 508 accessibility to reach a broader audience.
Reconstruct the information architecture.
Enhance the navigation and search.
Refresh the site’s overall visual design.
FOUNDATIONAL PROCESS
My process began with foundational research to identify both user and agency needs. This included:
HEURISTIC &MARKET RESEARCH
Analyze the DOE's role and digital presence to understand how to better communicate their mission.
Assessed content to decide what to remove, add, or reorganize for clarity.
DEVELOPER COLLABORATION
Met with developers to learn how to streamline the process for smooth handoff.
STAKEHOLDER ALIGNMENT
Understand their vision for the agency, aligning it with user needs to foster a cohesive redesign
USER ANALYSIS
I explored who the site’s users are, their motivations, and any pain points they encounter in navigating the agency’s resources.
USER
“IT’s so confusing, each link just takes me to another link.”
Information Architecture (IA)
Since the website structure was ineffective, I decided to lead a hybrid card sorting session with the team to refine the architecture.
In this phase, I focused on a clear and user-friendly system, emphasizing the importance of:
Proper language & terminology - I worked with stakeholders to relabel complex topics to reach an 8th-grade reading level, ensuring accessibility for their broad audience.
Clear hierarchy & grouping: I sought opportunities to organize content into categories and subcategories that worked for users and aligned with the agency's goals, ensuring users could find what they were looking for.
In every step, my goal was to advocate for a user-friendly experience while aligning the agency’s objectives with intuitive, accessible design.
